What are the Queen's Sapphire Jubilee Awards?

The Queen's Sapphire Jubilee Awards are awards for young people aged between 7 and 20 years old to support them to get started, improve and excel in sport/art/dance or drama. The Award can be used to cover expenses such as equipment, coaching, travel or fees essential to their progress.

There are three categories:

STARTER - up to £100 awarded for 7-16 year-olds

IMPROVER - up to £300 awarded to 8-18 year-olds (up to 25 for people with a disability)

EXEMPLAR - up to £500 awarded to 14-20 year-olds (up to 25 for people with a disability)

Applications must be received by 5pm on Friday 1 February 2019.

The awards will be presented at the Annual Council meeting in May 2019.

 

Award criteria

Starter Awards

For ages 7 - 16

Applicants for Starter Awards must complete sections 1,2,6,7,8+9 of the form and the activity they wish to start, the body/group that they will be joining and provide a statement from the body confirming this.

•             No evidence of prior achievement is required

•             A statement of skills/abilities and potential to be provided by teacher/coach/mentor etc.

•             A statement from the body or group they hope to join confirming this to be provided.

The successful applicants are only eligible to receive a Starter Award once. A maximum of £2,000 is available for Starter Awards this year.

 

Improver

To support young people who have shown commitment and improvement in sport/art/music/dance/drama and, who with added support and funding are likely to continue to improve.

•             Successful applicants from previous years can re-apply

•             Can be used to cover coaching, travel, entry fees, equipment

•             For ages 8 to18 years ( or up to age 25 for those with a disability)

•             Requires evidence of continuous improvement

•             Reference to be provided from the group or organisation the young person is involved with

Please note there is no guarantee that the Improver Award will be awarded to successful applicants from previous years, priority will be given to first time applicants.

 

Exemplar Awards

 

To support young people who have attained a high standard in sport/art/music/dance/drama and who, with additional support and funding could excel.

 

•             Statement to be provided from the sponsor/supporter/club or society officer showing why they feel that the extra funding is required, e.g. for specific high level event

A maximum of 4 Exemplar Awards are available this year. The awards to fall into four categories; Music and Dance/Art/Sport/Disability and only one award will be given per category. Please note applicants for an Exemplar Award should also apply for an Improver Award if appropriate, the Grants Board will not automatically place unsuccessful Exemplar applicants into the Improver Category.

 

Applicants for Improver and Exemplar Awards must complete all sections of the application and must:

•             Be aged between 8-20 at the time of application.

•             Be in full time education or an apprenticeship, or be classed as NEET (not in education employment or training).

•             Have a permanent address in the borough of Welwyn Hatfield.

•             Have reached, or have the potential to reach, County, National or International standard in their chosen sport. Or, show exceptional potential in art, dance or drama. Or, be embarking on a personal challenge, overcoming adversity which is of benefit to the borough's community.

•             Be able to demonstrate continuous improvement.

•             Be able to provide a reference from an "official" of the relevant governing body who has also signed the application form. The reference must:

          1. Be on the referee's organisation's headed notepaper

          2. Be addressed to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council

          3. Have the current date

          4. Refer to the Application for a Queen's Sapphire Jubilee Award in the text.

          5. Be hand signed (computerised signatures are not admissible)

 

Please note that priority will be given to those without alternative sponsorship or grants

 

Award amounts

Starter

A one off award to support young people who have potential in sport/art/music/dance/drama and require assistance to get started.

•             Up to £100

•             Can be used to cover entry fees, kit, equipment, travel

 

Improver

To support young people who have shown commitment and improvement in sport/art/music/dance/drama and, who with added support and funding are likely to continue to improve.

•             Up to £300

•             Can be used to cover coaching, travel, entry fees, equipment

 

Exemplar

•             Up to £500

•             Only payable once (but applicants can apply for an Improver Award in following years)

•             Can be used to cover coaching, travel, entry fees, equipment or other costs

 

 

What can I use the award for?

•             Coaching, tuition or training costs

•             Travelling expenses

•             Entry fees to competitions

•             Equipment/materials/kit


Awards will not be given for:

•             General clothing, spending money, food, membership fees

•             Events that have already taken place at the time when the application form is received by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council

•             Projects that are of an inappropriate nature

 

 

How do I apply?

Requests by letter, email or telephone will not be considered. Application and monitoring form can be downloaded from this page or can be requested by contacting the council on 01707 357567.

Applications must be received by 5pm on Friday 1 February 2019.

Please complete your own individual application, bulk non-individual applications will not be considered. Please also complete the application in full and not just mark it "refer to attached". Supplementary forms will be accepted but should not be used in place of the application form itself.

A panel of members will consider the applications. Please note applicants for an Exemplar Award should also apply for an Improver Award if appropriate, the Grants Board will not automatically place unsuccessful Exemplar applicants into the Improver Category.

What happens if I am successful?

•             Awards are presented to successful candidates at Annual Council in May 2019.

•             Successful applicants will receive a cheque for the amount awarded, please note cheques will not be sent out before Annual Council in May 2019.

•             The successful candidates and their guests are invited to an annual presentation ceremony. A photographer is normally present at the ceremony and photos may be used in publicity.

•             Successful applicants must keep us informed of their progress and how the money was spent.

•             Applicants will be asked for permission for information about themselves and their applications to be used in future promotional material for the scheme.
