Bereavement Services Review

The provision of Bereavement Services in Welwyn Hatfield is being reviewed to accommodate the changing needs of communities across the borough.  Proposals include plans for the borough's first crematorium at the site of the Lawn Cemetery in Hatfield.  You can view the proposals, and make comments, via the contact button here.

UPDATE: 5 October 2016

Works are required to test the ground where the proposed development is due to take place.  To proceed with plans, we need to ascertain whether there are any underground voids, tunnels or cavities which need to be mitigated before we can consider building on the ground.

From Monday 24 October 2016, we will be conducting dynamic probe testing in the proposed development area.  Testing is likely to take place for no more than six days, and will not affect access to the cemetery or impact on any graves or memorial areas.

 UPDATE: 29 June 2016

Residents are invited to have their say on the plans for The Lawn Cemetery in Hatfield, including designs for the borough's first crematorium.

Developed to address an increasing demand for cremations in the borough, it follows a review of the changing needs of the bereaved and their families.

The plans include relocating the current chapel, offices and workshop to the south-west of the grounds. The new building, which would be more sympathetic in design, will incorporate a reception, waiting areas, and facilities to offer cremations. The surrounding grounds would be landscaped to include a water feature and pond, additional parking and burial plots.

The consultation events will be on 2 July, 10am-4pm at Campus West, WGC, and Saturday 9 July, 10am-4pm at The Lawn Cemetery in Hatfield.

UPDATE: 7 December 2015

The council has agreed to construct the borough's first community mausoleum at The Lawn Cemetery in Hatfield.  The existing canopy within the Garden of Remembrance will be adapted to construct the 45-crypt mausoleum.

The chambers will be available from April 2016 but if you would like to register interest, please contact us on 01707 357000 or email cemeteryservices@welhat.gov.uk

Initial studies have also indicated a crematorium could form part of the plans to address the increasing demand within Welwyn Hatfield, alleviating pressure on existing services and reduce waiting times. A Member-led project board has been set up to explore this option further.

This page will be updated as more information becomes available.
