Hatfield Town Centre Redevelopment - Latest News

MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK COULD UNLOCK TOWN CENTRE'S POTENTIAL

Plans for the long term transformation and regeneration of Hatfield could be made possible by a new town centre multi-storey car park.

Surface level parking currently accounts for over a third of town centre space and Cabinet will consider a recommendation on Tuesday (4 April) to prepare plans for a multi-storey on the site of The Common car park.

Pivotal space, central to the Hatfield 2030+ vision and next stage of regeneration, could then be released for residential and mixed use development, driving increased footfall and attracting further retail and leisure to the area.

The council has already achieved considerable success with this, investing £4.65m in town centre improvements since 2015. This is on top of approximately £11.6m invested to acquire sites - including the recent acquisition of Culpitt House - and to develop larger plans, with proposals to transform Numbers 1 and 3-9 Town Centre now submitted.

Town centre transformation is at the heart of the Hatfield 2030+ vision for future regeneration and renewal. Preliminary survey work will take place over the coming months at other sites to begin assessing their viability for inclusion in longer term regeneration plans.

A detailed proposal will also be submitted to Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) outlining how the £6m in funding, secured from the Government's Growth Deal, should be used to support the development of town centre projects in Hatfield.

NEW COMMUNITY FACILITIES IN THE HEART OF HATFIELD

A new-look White Lion House was unveiled today (Monday, 12 December), containing a shared office space for the Hatfield Housing Office and Town Hub.

The refurbishment will provide more spacious facilities for tenants and the community, allowing them to visit and get the best from both under one roof.

The moves have also made way for the continued progress of the town centre investment programme, including providing PoundWorld with a prime retail spot in White Lion Square.

It also frees up their most recent temporary locations, at 1 and 1A Town Centre, for the planned regeneration of the site, which could see it transformed into 70 new homes and four retail units.

NEW PLANS TO TRANSFORM EASTERN SECTION OF TOWN CENTRE

Plans to transform the eastern entrance to Hatfield town centre are set to be unveiled at a series of public exhibitions.

The initial proposals could see Number 1 Town Centre (the old Pizza Hut site) and numbers 3-9 redeveloped into 70 high quality new homes and up to four retail units.

The exhibition will feature design illustrations and a 3D model of the proposed redevelopment, which is part of the council's wider investment programme to create a better environment for shoppers, businesses and residents in the town.

It follows a series of recent developments, including shop and flat makeovers in White Lion Square, the refurbishment of White Lion House and the addition of four national retailers - with more expected to follow.

MOVES PAVE THE WAY FOR ONGOING REGENERATION

The Hatfield Housing Office will temporarily move location this month, releasing pivotal space in White Lion Square for the continued progress of the town centre revitalisation programme.

The office will be based at Number 1 Town Centre - the unit behind the old Pizza Hut - from Tuesday 31 May. There will be no disruption to Housing Office services, apart from Friday 27 May when the office will close for one day.

The Hub will also move temporarily to 1A Town Centre, from Wednesday 15 June.

The Hub and the Housing Office will then relocate permanently to White Lion House later this year, providing a more spacious, high-profile town centre location - as well as making it easier for people to visit both facilities.

Update on other refurbishment work as part of our £3.65m investment in the town centre:

-       Some retail units are currently undergoing extensive internal refits and in The Arcade, the old canopy will be replaced.

-       A major revamp of White Lion House will see new windows, an improved interior and an external staircase, together with new refuse storage facilities.  Construction is scheduled to start later this year.

-       Following consultation at the Hatfield Hub, architects are preparing more detailed options for improvements to the public space in White Lion Square and leading up to 1 Town Centre. These will be available to view and comment on at the Hub.
