Green infrastructure is defined as 'a strategic network of multi-functional green space, both new and existing, both rural and urban, which supports natural and ecological processes and is integral to the health and quality of life in sustainable communities'.
The purpose of the Hertfordshire Strategic Highlights Green Infrastructure Plan (SHIP) is to provide an overview of existing strategic green infrastructure in the county, including consideration of assets and proposals which are significant for national and regional green infrastructure planning.
The plan provides an analysis of existing strategic Green Infrastructure assets, networks, gaps and opportunities across the county. It considers the opportunities for the enhancement and creation of new strategic green infrastructure and outlines a series of potential projects to deliver multiple functions and benefits. It provides advice on how strategic green infrastructure proposals can be taken forward forward through the spatial planning process and onto practical delivery. Together with the Welwyn Hatfield Green Infrastructure Plan it provides the context for the development of policies in the Local Plan.
