Hate crime

A hate crime is any criminal offence that is targeted at a person because of hostility or prejudice towards their race, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity or disability.

Hate crime is generally under reported partly due to a lack of awareness of what a hate crime is. If you have been harassed, abused or assaulted because of who you are or what you believe in, then you are a victim of a hate incident.

A hate incident is any incident which is perceived by the victim, or any other person as being motivated (wholly or partly) by prejudice towards race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity. When hate incidents become criminal offences they are known as hate crimes. A criminal offence is something which breaks the law of the land.

Report hate crime

We encourage victims and witnesses to report hate crimes and hate incidents. All reports will be taken seriously and treated sensitively.

Hate crime can be reported via the non-emergency number 101. In an emergency, where there is an immediate threat to life or property, always dial 999.

If you do not feel comfortable talking directly to the police, you can report it online. You can remain anonymous if you wish.

*You will be redirected to the Report-it website.

Alternatively, you can come into the the Council Offices in Welwyn Garden City to make a report in person.
