Environmental enforcement
In this section
District Enforcement Officers
District Enforcement Officers work on our behalf to tackle enviro-crime offences.
They patrol any area of land open to public access, including town centres, villages and parks.
We give them clear and defined delegated powers in line with our Corporate Enforcement Policy.
All district officers are vetted by the Disclosure and Barring Service, in compliance with British Standard 7858:2012.
They are fully trained and wear body cameras to record every interaction with members of the public.
District Enforcement Officers and Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs)
Officers can issue a FPN of up to £500 to anyone they witness (and have evidence to support) committing an environmental crime.
This could include dropping litter or fly tipping.
They are not paid by number of FPNs they issue. They are paid an hourly rate and do not receive any bonuses.
Community Education
They also take part in Community Education Days, giving training on littering, fly tipping and other enviro-crime to residents and local businesses.
