Weed control

On behalf of Hertfordshire County Council, we carry out a weed spraying programme in spring each year to ensure that the pathways and roads we maintain meet safety and other standards.

Our team carry out weed spraying in spring and will respray areas with regrowth in autumn.

Weed spraying is dependent on the weather, so if it is raining, we may not spray the weeds.

This is carried out during dry weather to ensure its maximum effectiveness. The programme is also carried out in line with all pesticides regulations and codes of practice.

Report overgrown weeds

We need to know:

  • the exact location or address of where the overgrown weeds are located
  • any additional information such as a photo to show the area of overgrown weeds

If you are reporting weed growth on a footpath that is dangerous because of the weeds, please report this to Hertfordshire County Council's Highway Department.

How do we deal with overgrown weeds?

Our team carry out weed spraying twice a year.

The first spray takes place between April and June with a follow up between July and September in areas where there is regrowth.

This means that our teams will only spray weeds across Welwyn Hatfield between these months but if you notice areas of excessive weeds becoming abnormally long during this period you can report it online.

We do not remove weeds out of season unless it becomes invasive or a health and safety hazard.

Report injurious weeds

To complain about an infestation of injurious weeds where there is a risk those weeds will spread to other land complete the Injurious Weeds Complaint form on GOV.UK.
