Our Housing Allocations Policy
Our Housing Allocations Policy tells you how we will allocate available social housing within Welwyn Hatfield and explains band reasons.
Social Housing is in short supply and so we have to prioritise our allocations on the basis of need. Those with the highest need to move will be offered accommodation before those with a lesser need to move. For instance a homeless family can expect to be offered accommodation more quickly than one who has a home but has one bedroom less than they need.
We place applicants in a priority band, based on their circumstances and these are summarised below. The date you enter that band becomes your ‘date in band’ or priority date. This will change if you move to a higher band but remain the same if you move to a lower band due to changes in your circumstances.
When we allocate properties from the shortlists, we will allocate them to the applicants in the highest band who have the oldest date in band, i.e. have been waiting in that band the longest.
We allocate Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council properties and also properties belonging to other Registered Providers, also known as Housing Associations.
