Street care and cleaning

Litter and litter bins

We are responsible for sweeping the streets and removing litter from public areas. There are hundreds of large, vandal resistant litter bins throughout the borough which we empty regularly.

Littering is an offence and we may issue fines (Fixed Penalty Notices) to people seen littering.

These can range from on-the-spot fines of £75 up to amaximum of £2,500 if it goes to court.

We can also issue street litter control notices to street vendors and takeaway premises to keep the area immediately around them tidy.

Request a new litter bin

To request new litter bins in a public area, we need to know the location of where you would like the new bin installed.

Our Environment Team will carry out a site visit to assess if a bin is required to improve the cleanliness of the street.

If your request is approved, a new bin will usually be installed within 3 months.
