Work Experience Policy

Identifying a work experience placement

3.1 A young person on work experience is here to learn, so it is important to keep them active and engaged throughout their placement to ensure their motivational levels are kept up and that they have a positive experience of the world at work and what it means to be part of a team.

3.2 The placement should offer some work shadowing opportunities, and the young person should be able to take part in non-critical tasks, which they can work on under supervision.

3.3 A work experience student cannot be left unsupervised and therefore a placement can only be hosted by teams where at least one member of staff will be present within the office at any time during the duration of the placement.

3.4 Careful consideration will be given to offering work experience placements in areas where the young person may have access to children or vulnerable adults, confidential information or be exposed to physical or other risks. A risk assessment may conclude that the work experience placement is unsuitable.

3.5 It is likely that the student will spend the week working with a number of different teams and officers in order to gain as much experience as possible.
