Work Experience Policy

Health and Safety

8.1 The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 defines young persons as any person who has not attained the age of 18. Young people on a work experience placement will unlikely be familiar with the environment of work and therefore all reasonable measures should be taken to minimise health and safety risks so far as is reasonably practicable by providing an enhanced level of information, instruction and supervision to enable them to work safely.

8.2 A risk assessment of the placement should be undertaken in line with our Risk Assessment Policy. Use our Risk Assessment Template for this. The student’s school may ask to see a copy of this if they feel it is relevant.

8.3 The Placement Coordinator will discuss the Fire and Evacuation procedures and will tell the student who the first aiders are and how they can contact them if needed in the induction.

8.4 The student must not be left unsupervised at any time. It is the placement manager(s) responsibility to ensure that the student is not left unsupervised and that at least one other staff member is present during the work experience placement period.

8.5 The young person will be encouraged to raise any health and safety concerns with the placement manager or placement coordinator.

8.6 The placement coordinator will notify the young person’s school or college immediately of any accident pertaining to the young person while on placement.
